006: Why Storytelling is Key to Your Business Success

Who's the Hero of your Marketing Message?

When it comes to promoting and marketing your products and services, it is only natural to assume that you should start with… well… your products and services. After all, they are the star of the show, right? They come with a number of benefits and features that you just can’t wait to get into the hands of your customers.

If the solution is clear.  If we talk loudly about the results. If we make sure it’s obvious why we are the perfect choice for our customer, then they will want to work with us. The marketing will take care of itself.

The hero of this story is clearly my product or services.

What’s the Real Problem in Your Marketing Story?

Take a moment to think about any amazing, binge-worthy story.  Whether it’s a Netflix show, a great book or a movie.  Think about the Hero for a moment.

They are usually the main character of the narrative.  They are the person who has to save the day but.. they never know how to do that by themselves.

Every hero has a problem.  An inciting incident that happens that they just can’t get sorted by themselves.

Not story is complete with a bomb that needs difussing, an empire that needs defeating or a guy who just can’t get that girl.

The hero of the story is flawed.  They need a guide.

Luke Skywalker needs Yoda. Katniss needs Haymitch. Your customers… they need you.

You are NOT the hero in this marketing story.

You need to position yourself as a the guide.

Now. If you’re the solution.  If your product or service helps your customer (the hero) to solve a problem.  You’d better get clear on what that problem actually is.

Without doing that, how will you ever position yourself as the solution they’ve been waiting for?
